Amen to that. What's the proportion of discussion of psychiatry at present, approaching 50% or something? (I haven't counted; it just feels like that much. Maybe more.) Good grief! May I also curse the trivial one-liner post. a.r.s is too bloody big as it is -- if y'r one of the critics, please distinguish yrself by *substance*. (I count ARSCC Joker/Degrader posts as substance -- a good song, the scientific aspects of tinfoil hats, that sort of thing. Joking/degrading is an important part of memetic immunisation. *Good* satire requires knowledge of the target, anyway.) >The issues that are getting ignored are: >1) Fishman appears in NL this week!!!! This would ordinarily be a >topic of _major_ discussion. Hello to all our readers in Holland. Please report everything ... >2) The clams have shut down David Gerard's school account by yelling >"boo" at bureaucrats. Hardly anyone has commented on this. A little more info below, as per my new Subject: line. I haven't seen any posts on the subject (except on vut.general, where it's getting a tiny run), but I have received many emails of commiseration (thank y'all) and a coupla offers of free UUCP accounts, which I may well take up if/when I get my own machine and modem (see below) ... thank you all. And it wasn't "boo" at bureaucrats -- it was "boo" at a POLITICIAN: Haddon Storey, Victorian Minister for Education. Liberal Party (the more right-wing party in Australia). Retiring at next election so not so easily swayed, worse luck. When I get more info on this, I'll let y'all know. (Perhaps this can go in the Clueless Politicians FAQ ...) >3) The clams have tried to shut down Rogue Agent's account. Where are >the yells of outrage? If yells of outrage from Australia will do any good, I and my organisation will be happy to send them. Hey, Rogue -- feel free to send full details to fun@suburbia.net . Perhaps we can make this one a worldwide fuss. Look, do we have a DATE for the next WORLD-WIDE PICKET? I may do a leaflet for it on this subject ... >The Hass nonsense (and others) appear to be quite successful at >distracting us from the real issues. Could someone please track down this Steve Town ('Peter Nathan Hass') moron in the physical world and have a, er, polite (and non-violent) word with it? Please? (Or is it an AI?) OK, here is the UPDATE ON DAVID'S ACCOUNT TROUBLES: It's become a battle between the SRC and VUT, intra-university politics; I'm more or less out of the loop now. I sent a letter to Ian Rae (Deputy Vice-Chancellor) stating that I would not use my acct. for non-SRC or non-academic purposes, and to that end I had obtained a private account (fun@suburbia.net) and could I have my school one back please. (We took this approach because I have a pile of Web pages to work on over summer for the SRC, and it's a pain in the arse having no access. Also, it'd be nice to have the account to *read* from, if not to *post* from. Netscape is really pissing me off.) Ian Rae wrote back saying he wanted to know the address of the private account first, then he'd consider giving the school account back. I would have been happy to comply (I shoulda listed it in my original letter), but the SRC President saw his letter and hit the fucking roof -- she took the request for the account details as insinuating that I and/or the SRC were lying about me having a new account. Which is probably what Ian Rae did intend. As such, the SRC (her) wrote a blistering letter back saying that it was highly inappropriate for him to ask for *private* (her emphasis) account details, and to take us at our word or have the planned shitfight. That was last Wednesday. Ian Rae still hasn't responded. I'm annoyed. But, oh well. The situation is annoying me, but I can understand the politics involved. Also, the Government has just released a new Discussion Paper on what to do to academia, and there are a LOT of people in academia in Australia who are very pissed-off at it; there's a great well of discontent to tap into should we wish it. My school account is courtesy of my SRC position (1995 paper editor, 1996 Media Officer [whatever that is -- I made up a title for myself and have to write my portfolio some time]), so I have to play this one the SRC's way. I no longer have a machine or modem at home, so I'm doing the "search out an XT and a 2400 baud modem" trick at the moment. (Anyone in Melb got a ~$10-50 example of each to spare? Condition no object -- just want something to use as a terminal. In fact, even a terminal and a modem would be fine ...) P'tic'ly as I'm having a lot of trouble today telnetting to Suburbia to read my mail. (VUT's connection seems to be generally shitful. I think they like it that way.) But I've just paid my Suburbia fees, so that account will be real. Feel free to send me mail. I'll probably answer quite tersely (the telnet connection is sooo sloooow), but I can *get* the stuff. I still haven't been able to read any gerdw@cougar.vut.edu.au for the last few weeks ...
