Coincidentally a friend of mine who is a teacher put me on to a private school that is "Licensed to use Applied Scholastics(TM) education services". It's Yarralinda School Inc. 4 Birchwood Drive, Mooroolbark, Victoria 3138 Phone: (03) 9727 3032 It is registered with the Education Department (#1930) and teaches Prep to Year 8, with plans to extend that to Year 12. According to the glossy brochure: "It offers a full curriculum incorporating all traditional classroom subjects. While there is particular emphasis on teaching the 3R's there is also an extensive array of subjects available outside the traditional curriculum, including ballet, Italian, sport, art, first aid, music and drama. Children at Yarralinda also learn about ethics, morals, manners and responsibility. In fact they are actually taught these as *subjects*. This is just one of the features of Yarralinda that makes it different to other schools. The other is that children at Yarralinda are actually taught something no other school in Victoria teaches - *they are taught how to study.*" There's even a page of anonymous testimonials, like: "I really like doing this course because I didn't really know how to do long division and now I do" N.L. and "Anthony loves going to school. His reading age is about 2 1/2 years above his age. He is a very confident and happy child as this is encouraged at the school. His attitude towards life is very positive. This is also something that he has gained from Yarralinda. He has hight integrity. As a parent this is a great relief!" Parent They offer the usual basic $cientology courses to outside students as well as their own: The Learning How to Learn Course The Study Skills for Life Course The Grammar and Communication Course The How to Use a Dictionary Course The "Communication is Fun" Course Along with the brochure comes a copy of "The Way to Happiness". I like the fine print at the bottom of the last page: "This may be the first nonreligious moral code based wholly on common sense. It was written by L. Ron Hubbard as an individual work and is not part of any religious doctrine. Any reprinting or individual distribution of it does not infer connection with or sponsorship of any religious organization. It is therefore admissible for government departments and employees to distribute it as a nonreligious activity." Yeah, right. Fees are OZ$1170 per term which puts them in the upper half of private school charges. By way of comparison, Catholic primary schools charge in the region of $350-$500 a term. Extra tutoring is available at $25 an hour, sold in 10 hour blocks. Sounds oddly familiar... - -- Home Page: Not the Scientology Home Page: Keep it in Usenet.
