Education: Studied in Greenwich Young People's Theatre at the age of 15 but shortly after dropped out. Consider acting as a serious ambiotion in 1975, he attempted to join London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art at 17 years old but was rejected. Won a scholarship to Britain's Rose Bruford Drama College of Speech and Drama and received a BA in Theatre Arts in 1979 there.
Relationships: Late 1980's married British stage actress Leslye Manville (has a son, Alfie from this marriage); 1990-1992 married actress Uma Thurman (divorced after 18 months of marriage due to drinking problems); met on the set of Immortal Beloved atress/model Isabella Rossellini Donya (dated on and off until Gary's drinking interferred with their relationship); 16 February 1997 married professional photographer Donya Fiorentino and is still married to her (met in alcoholic rehadilitation; they have two sons together, Gulliver Flynn, who was born on the 20th August 1997, and Charles John, who was born in February 1999).
Career: During the 1980's  Gary toured Europe and South America as a member of the Glasgow Citizen's Theater. Gary appeared in a number of plays, including Massacre at Paris, Desperado Corner, A Waste of Time and The Pope's Wedding, (for which he received TIME OUT'S Fringe Award for Best Newcomer of 1985-'86 and The British Theatre Association's Drama Mag. Award as Best Actor 1985).
The films Sid and Nancy where he played Sid Vicious and Prick Up Your Ears brought him early notice. He won the Evening Standard Film Award as Best Newcomer for his role in Sid and Nancy. In 1988, he received a Best Actor nomination from the British Academy of Film and
TV Arts for his portrayal of 60's play-wright Joe Orton in Prick Up Your Ears.
Oldman has an ability to transform himself physically and a has a brilliant command of accents which has allowed him to play a variety of characters and histortical figures including Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK and Ludwig van Beethoven in Immortal Beloved
Gary wrote, directed and produced his own motion picture, Nil By Mouth in 1997. Gary turned to directing saying he was tired of acting after 20 years and wanted a new challenge.
Oldman has also done the voice over for Ruber in the Warner Bros' antimated film The Quest for Camelot.
Gary played Dr.Smith in the movie Lost In Space earning him $4,000,000!  =)
Other Stuff: Early in Oldman's life he considered an ambition in music, his mother Kathleen encouraged this career; Gary has two sisters, one who appeared as Janet in Nil By Mouth under the name Laila Morse (anagram for "my sister" in Italian). The book written by Anne Rice, The Violin is totally inspired to the chracter of Ludwig wan Beethoven, performed by Oldman in Immortal Beloved.
