Help!
I am a teacher in Victoria trying to develop a unit of work
on Australian Antarctic Exploration, desperately wanting to get a copy of
The Last Husky.
The video is no longer on the ABC or Roadshow distribution
list and I have had no luck to date locating where I can get a copy in
Australia. Can you assist in any way?
Sincerely
Jonathan deLacy

I received an email from Jon Soyka in Ontario, Canada. He is producing a
television documentary on ice yachts and was interested in further
information on the ice yachts at Mawson.
He wrote:
What interests me is -
a/ How do I obtain photographs, or even better, video footage of people
enjoying their rides on the ice-boat at the south pole area?
b/ Is there a way to contact former members who have had this
experience? This vessel is of ourse recognized as the most
southerly sailing on earth of an ice-boat (Ice-boats are used in some
23 countries around the world and were invented in Holland in the 1600's)
and such needs to be mentioned in the documentary.
c/ Who build the boat in the first instance and I do believe it was
damaged, has it been re-built?
What is the boat named?
Are photos available (or video) of the boat being built?
What charges are incurred in getting good copies of the
photos or video?
What permissions are needed, and who are they obtained from, for
copyright purposes in order to use the images and information in
the documentary?
I also wondered if there have been any other ice yachts at the
antarctic bases other than the two at Mawson in the 1990s.
If anyone has any information that they'd be happy to pass on would they
please email Jon on
Thanks

I am a book designer currently working on a book by Roff Smith about people
and places in Antarctica.
I am currently looking for an image for the cover... my initial research has
mainly only found shots of penguins and icebergs. We are looking for
something that conveys the comraderie of those working in Antarctica.
Perhaps a small group shot outside a hut or or a small group working
outside. It might be quite a fun snap or a more serious image.
The book is being published by a major Australian publisher and is for wide
distribution. We will pay a fee for a suitable image.
If anyone has any appropriate images I would love to hear from them.
I can be contacted at email: philc@eis.net.au
or 03 9429 1151. Regards, Phil Campbell
School/Public Speakers Calling
All Expeditioners! Are you interested in giving talks
on Antarctica to schools or community groups in your area? Then Nick Lovibond (Antarctic
Division) wants you! Nick
occasionally gets inquiries for speakers from around Australia, and is very keen
to compile an availability list. Nick
writes: The
favourite topic for younger school classes is usually wildlife, but "What I
did when I worked in Antarctica" is always popular.
Generally, just to have been to Antarctica is qualification enough -
perhaps the most frequently asked question is "What's it like there?"
We are usually able to provide you with brochures and posters for your
visit. A look through our website
might also help – our new magazine Australian
Antarctic is available online and has a good collection of news and current
issues. The
overall idea is to have a geographically diverse list of willing speakers - the
more the merrier, with several in the bigger population centres.
Hopefully past expeditioners will be happy to join the list – you can
always say 'no' if Nick does contact you, and you're
not likely to hear from him very
often. Nick is very conscious of
privacy concerns, and won’t give out your details – rather, after finding a
willing soul, he would ask him/her to contact the inquirer. So, if you are interested in
sharing your experiences and tales of derring-do on an ad hoc basis, please
register your details with Nick. He
needs your geographic region
(ie as well as an address), your
contact phone/email and the best time
to ring/email. He can be contacted thus:

The Bureau of Meteorology is seeking a
diary by Lt Adams RN written on the "Fatherest South Sledging Trip" of
Ernest Shackleton's expedition 1907-09. The diary is an original record of
the meteorological observations taken on that journey.
Apparently it was in the Bureau's possession in 1929 and an analysis of the
data was written, but the whereabouts of the original diary is a mystery.

Alvina Seavers (daughter of Jim Seavers) requests that anyone who knew the
late Jim Seavers (Mawson 1961, 1963), and in particular has photos of him,
to please contact her by email at
parker@corplink.com.au .
Alvina would appreciate this as due to family circumstances, she did not
get to know her father while he was alive.
I often give talks about the Hell of Antarctica to Year 7 and 8 kids at high
school, but all my slides are of a MCP era (Mawson 1970), and there were
no women south then. I emphasise that there are nowdays lots of
opportunities down south for women, as well for as men, and I would like
to show a slide or two of a woman working outdoors, in less than pleasant
conditions - just to show than not only CAN it be done, but it IS done. If
anyone would like to donate such a slide or two to the cause please contact
me
at work on 03 9524 2277, at home on 03 5784 2041, or email
tomkins.bob@a2.abc.net.au.
Many thanks.
