MODIS Satellite pictures, 250m resolution of Mawson seaice.

Picture 28 February 2008

It was lucky it was a clear day yesterday. You can see the strip
of fast ice that they are breaking through. The image is unmapped - but Mt
Henderson and the Frammes Mtns and Casey Range are clearly visible. There is
a bit of a satellite loading glitch creating some discontinuity in the ice
but you can clearly see the strip of fast ice, then open water then floating
pack and there is a little bit of cloud on the edges of the image. For scale
one needs to remember that the distance from Mt Hendo is about 20km so it
looks like they had about 60km of fast ice - some rotten (greyish) which
included about 20 km of solid fast ice.

Seems the bit of a blow they had
whilst at Mawson did break up the ice they had pushed, broken on the way in.
So only some patches of thick pack to get through, but the polynyas are
refreezing again.
